dragons in the sky | day 17/30 days of april poems

“No, I would not want to live in a world without dragons, as I would not want to live in a world without magic, for that is a world without mystery, and that is a world without faith.” -R.A Salvatore

Once, dragons flew in the sky,
And soared above clouds so high,
Their scales were all the colors of the world,
Glittering reds, purples, greens, and blues,
All of them gleaming like pearls,

Their wings were fast, their eyes were kind,
They flew as light as the fairykind,
And when they roared, the world it shook,
And every soul could not help but look,
Look and see the dragon so tall,
A creature so magnificent, it could never fall.

Once, humans talked to the dragons in the sky,
And knew the language of the wind so shy,
Together they walked under the face of the sun,
Together they’d sing, their voices as one.

But alas, those days are long gone,
Human and dragon sing no longer as one.
For in all of my long-lived life,
I’ve never seen a dragon in the sky.

Have we just grown blind to our friends of old?
With a heavy heart, I admit, I do not know.
Perhaps we maybe failed to listen
Perhaps we were to proud to hear.
Perhaps our hearts grew slowly blind
To the magic of dragonkind.
Maybe they’re dead, like a fallen bird,
Or maybe they just never were.

Whatever the case, I’ve always asked why,
Why are there no dragons in the sky?

About Isabelle Knight 233 Articles
Hi! My name is Isabelle Knight, and I'm the young writer and middle-grade author of the Enchantria series! I love writing (though the writing process is usually both magical and maddening) and have been writing since I was ten. When I'm not writing about eerie shadows, daring heroines, and magic, I'm usually stuck with my nose in a book, drawing, or playing the ukulele or tin whistle.
