Letters: A Sort-Of Epistolary Writing Contest

Hello, you all! ^^ How has writing been going for you all? It’s actually been going well for me over here — I’ve started a new novel (have no clue if I’ll ever finish it), and started writing an edit letter to myself with all the very very dreadful structural issues I’ve found in Island Keepers… Oh yes, and I have COMPLETELY forgotten to mention this to y’all, but all paperbacks of the Enchantria series are now out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So if you’d like a physical copy of one of my books, you can head to the Books page of my blog to check them out!

Anyway, today’s post is a very exciting one!!!

For some some very odd, inexplicable reason, I have always loved letters. I used to have penpals from the US and Australia (who I’ve unfortunately fallen out of touch with), and we would mail each other physical letters and drawings with envelopes that we decorated as much as possible! It was such fun, and I always loved being able to get physical letters in the mail!!!

And so, letters have always been something I’ve really loved, and I love stories where letters are an important part of it! And so, today I am ever so thrilled to announce my very first epistolary writing contest!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (sort of)

The Theme/Prompt:

Write a story told through letters (aka epistolary form), or a story that revolves around a letter! (E.g. a story where your MC finds a letter that is important to the story). The story itself does not have to be epistolary, but a letter must be important to it. Your short story can be anything you’d like it to be!!! Spooky, dramatic, contemporary, fantasy, anything!

Prizes!!! (because we all want to know what the prizes are)

The winning entry shall be featured and have their short story posted on my blog, along with an interview spotlight!

The runner-up shall get a shout-out and an honorable mention on the blog! (You are free to post your short story on your own blog/platform as well, so long as you post it one month after it’s been posted here).

Guidelines:

  • Word count: 100 – 6,000 words.
  • Deadline: November 10, 2025, 12 AM PST (Pacific Standard Time).
  • Who can enter: Anyone! This contest is open to all ages, worldwide! (Though, er, twould be great if your story could be written in English, so I could actually read and understand it. XD)
  • How to submit: Please email your short story to me with the email address listed on the Contact page of this blog with the subject line: Letters Contest Entry. In the email, please either paste your short story in the email or send the story as a Word document and include an author name and bio.
  • Please keep your language clean!!! Aka no swearing, graphic content, or anything of the sort. Please do not submit anything that is hateful or discriminatory to any race, religion, or group of people. (Not that I think any of you will need this warning. 🙂 But best to put that there just in case)

Art thou all ready to begin? If this has sparked an idea in you, then grab a pen and start writing that story!!! 🙂 (or perhaps a better question is… erm, is anyone willing join? …*is rather worried no one is actually going to join this*….)

But if you do join, then I look forward to reading your stories!!!

Till next time,

-Isabelle

Hi! My name is Isabelle Knight, and I'm the young writer and middle-grade author of the Enchantria series! I love writing (though the writing process is usually both magical and maddening) and have been writing since I was ten. When I'm not writing about eerie shadows, daring heroines, and magic, I'm usually stuck with my nose in a book, drawing, or playing the ukulele or tin whistle.

  1. Ooh. I LOVE writing letters, especially fictional ones! I got to add some in my most recent book and it is still one of my favorite parts. Hopefully I will get some free time in which to do this. (I’m sure I’ll be able to scrounge some up!) Sounds like loads of fun.

    • Ahh, I struggle with writing letters so much! XD I adore them once they have turned out well, but getting them to turn out well isn’t easy. I’ve found it rather hard to write in one particular character’s voice! But I do still love writing letters, as much as I struggle with them. I would LOVE to see you enter this contest!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (I am sure your story shall be fantastic!) I hope you get some free time to do this and enter! 🙂 If so, I look forward to seeing your entry!

  2. Ooh! How delightful! I’d love to enter the contest, and I already have story ideas swirling up in my head!
Such a fun prompt!!! I love writing letters (mine end up being really long and rather winding…) and this looks like a blast!

    • Yayy, I’m so glad to hear that!!! I’ve read some of your writing, so I look forward to seeing your entry! Hope you have fun with the story! (And I love long and winding letters!)
