Hello, everyone!!! Isabelle Knight here again with another book review!!! So, I recently read (technically listened since I got the audiobooks on Spotify) the Wings of Fire series by Tui T Sutherland, and it’s been on my TBR for around FOREVER. And hurrah, I got the audiobooks!!!! I recently just finished the first arc (the first five books), and now I just finished the first book in the second arc!
So, Moon Rising is about a NightWing dragonet, Moonwatcher. The book takes place I think a few years after the war in Pyrrhia ended, and the five dragonets of destiny came up with a plan to make sure that there would never be another war again – a school. A school for dragonets from all tribes to come together to learn and understand each other! But things are a bit more complicated for Moon. Because she has a secret, a secret that she can never reveal – she can read minds, a power that should’ve been lost a long time ago, an awful power. Within days, Moon is bombarded with strange thoughts, including those of a mysterious dragon who may or may not be the most dangerous enemy of all. When someone starts attacking dragons within the academy, Moon will have to choose between keeping her powers safe and hidden, like her mother always told her to, or to risk everything to save her friends…
I absolutely love this book!! As I’ve said, I’ve read the first arc, but I think I enjoy the second arc way better! At least, the beginning of it. I’ve yet to finish the arc, BUT I just absolutely loved this book!
One thing I loved about the book was definitely all the characters and all the character development. Moon is just a really real character – she has her own fears, flaws, and she’s not a perfect hero or thinks she is, like the main characters in some of the previous books. She’s shy, she doesn’t dare to speak up much, and I kind of love that. Which might sound really strange, but I just like that she’s not the perfect, tough hero that you might usually find in books. And I also think that her shyness was really done in a way that stays true to her character. She didn’t sound whiny either, because at the same time, she’s struggling with internal conflict and just really trying to move forward and figure out what is really happening.
It was also SO MUCH fun to see all the characters in the previous books make an appearance here!! Kinkajou, the RainWing dragonet, is definitely my second favorite character (Moon’s my favorite!!!), and she’s just so so so fun!!!!
Another thing I loved about the book was the plot – it was just so exciting! Adventure and mysteries at every turn that will keep you on the edge of your seat!!! I know I would’ve been (literally!!! Sometimes in really intriguing books, I just literally find myself on the edge of my seat… 0_0) if it weren’t for the fact I was just curled up in bed listening to this audiobook while drawing and getting little eraser bits all over my bed. XD
In this book, you never know what’s going to happen next, and each plot twist is just so exciting!!! And it’s not out of the blue, because I feel like Tui T. Sutherland does an amazing job of planting subtle hints all throughout the book. She also did an amazing job of making me feel for the characters!
I don’t know if I have a ‘favorite scene’ in this book, because it’s really just a whole adventure, and there is NO WAY I can just pick one. But I would say one memorable scene is definitely when Moon sort of confronts Winter, who is an IceWing. It’s not exactly a confrontation, but she’s trying to help, and at the same time, she’s really shy and kind of terrified to speak up.
And of course, I really enjoyed getting to see into the thoughts of all the other characters! As I’ve said, Moon has the powers of mind-reading, and so, through her, I could just really get to see what was going on inside all those other characters’ heads, which was SO FUN!!!!! I’ve just gotten started on the seventh book, which has Winter as the MC, and I have to say, I’m missing all of Moon’s mind-reading abilities.
One thing I do wish we could’ve seen more of was a character who I won’t mention because that would be spoilers. However, I just felt like there was so much more to her character, like she has some more backstory or might contribute something important to the plot, but then all of a sudden, she died in the attack, and we never really got to find out…
But yeah! I absolutely loved this book!!! There is a lot more I could say about this, but I don’t want to give spoilers! ;D I really enjoyed this, and I would highly recommend it to readers who are fans of dragons, prophecies, mysteries, and WHOLE LOT of adventures!! I really think fans of the first series (or first arc, whatever you wanna call it) will really enjoy this! I know I did! There is some fighting here, though definitely not as much as the first series which I sometimes compare to the Hunger Games. Mainly the attack on the dragons, but I think that this level of fighting is fine in MG adventure/fantasy.
So, yeah! I guess that wraps up this review! I definitely recommend this book!!! I’d probably give it around 4.5 stars!! Thank you guys so much for coming and I shall see you again in the next post!!! Also, don’t forget – if you’d like to see some more book reviews, don’t forget to check out my YT channel, and definitely don’t forget to check out Marvelous Middle Grade Monday here! Yay, books!

I enjoy books with exciting plots. I’ve been curious about this series for a long time, and you’re making me think I should try to start the series. Thanks for the great review. And we’re glad you’re joining MMGM again this week.
Thanks!!! And thank you for reading!! I feel like the first series is kind of more… what, has less of a mystical vibe and more of gritty adventure. Perfect for anyone who loves exciting plots!!
Oh, the dragonets are coming, they’re coming to save the day, they’re coming to fight, for they know what’s right, oh the dragonets are coming! Sorry, I couldn’t help myself. XD
Thanks for not including any spoilers. Your review has me anxious to read this one. The character and setting have me hooked. Happy MMGM!
Thanks for having me on another Monday!! And hehe, I’m a firmly NO SPOILERS person. Thanks for reading! I hope you do read these books someday!!!
Great review, Isabelle! I must check out this author, especially as I love stories with dragons! 🙂
Ooh, if you love dragons then I totally recommend this book!!! Anyway, thanks for reading!! I hope you do read (and enjoy!) this book someday!
Sutherland has been very popular with my fantasy readers, who are always surprised that she worked on some of the Warriors books as well. Thanks for your very thorough review!
Hehe, I can see why your fantasy readers like them! I was SO SHOCKED when I found out Erin Hunter was a pen name for a group of writers!!! Thanks for reading!!!
This is one of my niece’s favorite series. Now I see why she likes it so much! I also love shy characters, maybe because I was a shy kid.
Thanks for a fun and detailed review!
Thanks for reading!!! And I’m really glad your niece enjoys the books!! They’re awesome!
Thanks so much for the insightful review, Isabelle!
It sounds like Sutherland likes playing with the typical hero stereotype in this book. I really like the way Moon can read the thoughts of the other dragons, which maybe allows for us as readers (and Moon?) to have a deeper understanding instead of rushing to snap judgments.
I love the way you describe Moon as not whiny because she’s focused on what’s happening instead of her own inner struggles.
She sounds like a fascinating character!
Thanks for reading! 🙂 And yeah, I absolutely LOVE that!!! She is focused on her inner struggled at times, but I think all the action and how she’s really trying to find out what’s happening sort of balances it all out!
Sounds like an interesting series!
My nephew loves this series, but I haven’t read it yet. I am really intrigued after reading your review, though. Thanks for sharing this! I’ll check out your YT channel, too. Hope you have a great week!
I’m not a fantasy reader but, wow! you sure found a series that is perfect for you. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
If it’s got dragons, I’m definitely gonna check it out! Thanks for sharing your thoughts – especially about character development.
