gardening | little july musings

Hello, all! ^^ July is upon us (oh my!), and I hope that you’ve been having a delightful summer! How are y’all? How have your projects been faring? Read any good books lately?? Summer is such a nostalgic time for me, full of so many memories of both tragic and brilliant events, and I wrote something down in my journal last night that I thought I might share with you.

In case you don’t know, last year, I attempted growing a garden. (Courtesy of The Peach Thief by Linda Joan Smith, who was kind enough to send me a copy of her book. This is a brilliant middle-grade historical fiction and I will warn you that reading this will probably really make you want to try growing your own garden.)

Izzy says, “HELLOOO!!!” to all you blog readers

I was trying to grow two flowers in particular, because they sounded pretty easy to manage and I thought they looked pretty — zinnias and marigolds.

Also marigolds are my birth flower so surely that means they must be lucky and won’t die on me this time, right?

Alas, though they fared much better than the last time I tried growing plants, the poor things drowned in the summer storms.

*weeps*

And so I was thinking over this last night and wrote down a little something. :))

I have never been good at gardening. I don’t understand why, nor can I possible understand people who are good at gardening. It does sometimes, seem truly like these people have been given some magic touch that I somehow missed out on. I have tried my darndest, followed instructions on growing flowers to a t, watered them meticulously, talked to them, tilled the soil, and for some always inexpleciable reason, none of my plants have ever survived past saplinghood.

Last summer it was the storms that killed them off, and what can I do about storms?

And yet, even though none of the plants made it past saplinghood, I still recall so fondly everything it gave me. The hours spent tilling the soil in the warm sun, talking to the big old tree beside me, and the indescribable tender joy there was in seeing life form.

There was this one marigold sapling who was growing strong — stick stem, beautiful leaves. It was always such a joy to see it every morning.

Maybe there is beauty in experience, in trying, even if you’ve nothing to show for it but your own fond memories.

I still hope to succeed at gardening someday.

So there you have it, folks! Some little musings on gardening that may or may not make sense to you. :)) I haven’t been gardening this year (due to the fact that now we live in an apartment and someone has claimed absolutely all of the soil on the roof *adjusts hat while glaring at them*) but I had some thoughts on it that I wanted to share!

Do let me know down in the comments if you’ve ever tried gardening before! (And also how it went!!!) Also if it went well, I want your secrets XDD. I love hearing from y’all!

And, alas, I fear I shall have to leave you here for now! I’ll warn y’all that I might not be so very active on my blog these coming months (*cough* I have a book to finish *cough*), but I shall still be posting, though perhaps not as often as I used to!!

Till next time and wishing y’all an absolutely splendiferous July! And a happy almost Fourth of July to those who celebrate! :DDD May you enjoy lots of fireworks.

(Also I found out you can insert GIFs into your blog posts!!!!!!! Which is most fun!)

Hi! My name is Isabelle Knight, and I'm the young writer and middle-grade author of the Enchantria series! I love writing (though the writing process is usually both magical and maddening) and have been writing since I was ten. When I'm not writing about eerie shadows, daring heroines, and magic, I'm usually stuck with my nose in a book, drawing, or playing the ukulele or tin whistle.
